About
Artist Statement:
My art explores the tension and dance of life at the cellular level. I use materials in unexpected ways to highlight their organic components and show how they are related to the primordial journey of us, our cells and our environment. My work is filled with “Biology Rising” themes emerging in circles from conception to death and beyond.
In this body of work, made between 2020-2025, I’m exploring the vestiges of nature and mark-making with paper, paint and fiber art sculpture to illustrate humanity’s fragility and interdependence on each other, and the natural world. We are balancing hope and heartbreak as we adapt in this time of global change. Disruptions to our daily life force us to learn new ways to co-exist in community.
Artist’s Bio:
Julie makes art in her studio on the edge of the North Umpqua River in Roseburg, Oregon. Her work explores humanity’s interdependence on nature and collaboration with each other.
Julie’s “Biology Rising” installation won the Juror’s Choice award at Eugene 2022 Mayor’s Art Show and was featured in Fiber Arts Now magazine’s “Paper Made” show in 2023, and on OPB, Southern Oregon’s “The Work of Art” show. She is now showing “Orgins,” a group of three large windowfront installations in downtown Eugene, Oregon.
Julie has a BFA in performing arts, and a BA in English. Her journey as a visual artist started in the early 90’s with mixed media, clay and printmaking (with her first artwalk in 2004!) and then took off in 2018 after exiting from her multifaceted career in the tech industry. She has shown paintings, monoprints and sculptural public installation work in group and solo shows nationally over the past 6 years and is especially interested in public art to tell stories about the natural world and our place in it.
Julie has been balancing a career in Technology, writing and making art for the past 25 years. Most recently in her corporate life she worked at HP Inc. [and Hewlett Packard] in product development and marketing, leading teams through product innovation and corporate culture change. Julie enjoys collaborating on large projects and is comfortable leading teams through complex ideas and solutions. Julie’s artwork has come full circle, with all her life experiences embedded in layers of color, texture and form.
